Leading a Horse to Water : Daily MTG : Magic: The Gathering

This article by Mark Rosewater, a designer at Wizards of the Coast, covers some of his process for creating an interesting new gameplay mechanic for the latest Magic: The Gathering set. I found the write-up engaging and covers a lot of general game design best practices along with some good advice.

I am obsessed with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for PSP. I love going on missions with my specialized gear and my hammer, hunting down huge nasties for obscure materials to use in my next crafted piece of armor or new and improved weapon. I love the victory fanfare when you finally defeat a tough monster. I love coming back to particularly troublesome monsters later on and just destroying them in record time. I also love how each creature is basically a Capcom-style boss battle, waiting for you to learn and master, requiring patience, skill, and a bit of fore-thought.

I had a tough time trying to find a proper video to convey what some of the monster battles are like, so I settled on this one since hammers are my weapon of choice at the moment and I found it very helpful. Of course if that ever gets stale I can always make up an arsenal of one of the 10 other weapon types and aim to become just as proficient with it. The game is very open-ended when it comes to play-style. I love it so much!

The red veined darter, a type of dragonfly, after a rain shower.
I initially just liked this, but it’s definitely worthy of a reblog in retrospect.

GameSetWatch - An Odd/Awesome Live Chiptune Performance From Omodaka - A really interesting performance by chiptune artist Omodaka at the Bowery Ballroom New York on March 22, 2009. This just introduced me to his stuff and I’m loving it, along with all the other videos over at Far East Recordings’ YouTube page. This video has also prompted me to start exploring more chiptunes style stuff now. There’s also a wonderfully informative video about new Japanese musical styles that talks about Omodaka and his unique mixture of retro chiptunes and older enka singing (it also covers the Pistol Valves and Yoshida Brothers which great as well).
